Audiobook Binder 2.0 released

December 27, 2013 — 10 Comments

I finally took some time to tidy up code and do some refactoring on Audiobook Binder. ABB was my first major Cocoa/Obj-C project so it was not pretty inside. Not pretty at all. One of the objectives was to split audiobook converter code from app delegate and move converter window to its own .xib file in order to be able to have multiple converters. Not hard but tedious process. And thanks to Vocabulist updating localized .xib files from base version was really easy.

So main feature of Audiobook Binder 2.0: you can have multiple audiobook windows and run multiple audiobook conversions in parallel. It is not available in AppStore yet for several reasons:

  • Developer’s part of AppStore is closed till Dec 28th
  • This release involved a lot of code-pushing and though I tested it fairly well I’d like to be able to fix any missed blunders ASAP. And with AppStore you just can’t do this

So once AppStore is open for business and assuming there are no major blockers I’ll push it for approval by Apple

  1. Downloaded and tried the Audiobook Binder. Converted approx. 200 files into one book consisting of 9 chapters. Although chapters show OK in the ABB, expand and hide properly etc., when the book is loaded to iTunes chapters are not showing. The book loaded to the iPhone has no chapters either.

Just wanted to let you know

    • I have the same problem. Just wanted to give a heads up. That being said I love this program, thank you for making it and for making it free!

  2. Hello,
I have loved audiobook binder, however I have discovered a flaw with the program. For instance, with the Harry Potter series I have bound chapters together to create a book, and I have done this for all of the Harry Potter books. However, there is some glitch in the program where I will be listening to Harry Potter book 1 and in the middle of listening to the book it will jump to book 2. This only happened to a few of the books, but now it is happening to all of them. I don’t know what is going on, but I can’t finish a book now without it skipping to the next book. Also, when I try to go back to where the book skipped, or past that part in the audiobook, it will not let me listen to that portion of the book, rather, it will skip to the next book in the sequence. Is there any way to fix this problem?
    Thanks,
    John

  3. Hi

It seems there is something strange in that app, the results respectively. Big books with playtime longer than 24 hours shows different playtime. Maximum duration in settings is set to “– hrs”.
    E.g. Neal Stephenson’s “Amalthea”.
    Playtime mp3: 33 h 28 size: 1.8 GB
    Playtime m4b: 9 h (iTunes) size: 1.4 GB
    27 h (QuickTime)
    7 h 24 (MediaInfo)

    Any suggestions?

    kind regards
    Stephan

    • Some additional info:
listen to the book in iTunes it will stop after 7:24:43; Quicktime replay the hole book, but without sound after position 7:24:43. :-(

I’ve joined all the mp3 files into one – playtime 34:28:12 in VOX and iTunes. It can’t be completely loaded in AudioBook Binder, only 18 seconds. This is the length of the first mp3 file….

      So, where is the bug?

It’s not a bug in software, AFAIK it’s a known issue with format. There is a limit on number of audio samples for one file. After that some software may indicate invalid play time. Audiobook binder can split long audiobooks into volumes. From iTunes point of view it’s going to be one audiobook but at file level it’s several files. You can set volume size in Audiobook Binder’s preferences dialog. I suggest something like 8-12 hours. This should fix your problem.

  4. Wondered to convert the program under Windows?

  5. One thing I find peculiar is the apparent inability to save work in progress. I was in the middle of compiling an audiobook, and then had to restart my computer because of an OS update. And there was no way (as far as I can see) to save the project, so I lost all the work I’d done. The same would apply if I created a project and needed to come back later to make a change.

    Am I missing something?

  6. Thank you so much for this simple tool!
It’s all I need to convert a couple of mp3s to one audiobook)

  7. Thanks a lot for this perfect small tool! Finally, I was able to create audiobooks from all of our CDs. My daughter is happy.

    большое спасибо

    Tom
